The Future of Literacy in Illinois Policy Breakfast held on Wednesday, April 15 brought together policymakers, foundation officers, researchers and educators for presentations and discussion about ways to improve literacy policy in Illinois and around the nation.
Sponsored by the University of Illinois at Chicago Center for Literacy and the UIC Research on Urban Education Policy Initiative, the event was opened with an address by UIC College of Education Dean Alfred Tatum, an expert in the literacy development of African American males, which was followed by three presentations on critical areas of literacy policy.

• Access, Equity, and Empowerment: Supporting Digital Literacies for All Learners By Nathan Philips (UIC) & Michael Manderino (Northern Illinois University).
• Early Childhood Literacy: Policy for the Coming Decade by William Teale, Melanie Walski, Emily Hoffman, Colleen Whittingham,Maureen Meehan ( University of Illinois at Chicago ); and Anna Colaner (Illinois Governor’s Office of Early Childhood).
