Family Start Learning Center’s ESL (English as a second language) is a community-based program that supports Head Start parents and family members learning English so they can be strong advocates for their children’s education. Families can take advantage of learning resources throughout Chicago. FAST ESL classes encourage participation through activities that are focused on speaking and listening. The curriculum incorporates Head Start topic designed to encourage parent-child learning activities outside the classroom. English learners of all levels work together in the FAST classroom and learners track their own progress through self, peer, and facilitator assessment. A new book of the month club initiative encourages attendance by offering a free English children’s book every month to parents who attend at least four classes. Learners read the books together in class and facilitators provide follow-up activities to do with children at home. Throughout the school year FAST ESL works to provide Head Start parents with opportunities for educational success so that they feel empowered and confident in their ability to be their child’s first and most important teacher and literacy model.
