CFL’s new initiative “Read, Make, and Play” fosters parent-child reading time. This month’s featured book, Imagine! by Raul Colon, tells a whimsical story of art appreciation. A young boy traverses New York City on his skateboard, visits the Museum of Modern Art, and makes some unexpected acquaintances.
The narrative is conveyed entirely through Raul Colon’s illustrations. The prolific Puerto Rican-American artist, who has created over thirty books for children, achieves unusually vibrant colors and rich texture by combining watercolor washes, etching, and colored and litho pencils. He attributes his creativity to a childhood illness that left him housebound, unable to escape except through drawing in his composition notebooks and making his own comics.
Reading Imagine! with your child will similarly delight them, opening their mind to flights of fancy and new vistas of possibility.
