Linguistic Justice

linguistic

Author: April Baker-Bell

Why is this Book Awesome?

Baker-Bell approaches abolitionist teaching through a linguistic perspective, arguing that anti-black racism is perpetuated when white mainstream language is held as a gold standard in schools and that it is neither liberatory nor equitable to teach Black students to assimilate to white mainstream English. Rather, Baker-Bell argues that Black language should be studied, celebrated, and used as a means to promote culturally sustaining social change. Baker-Bell’s identification of the linguistic components of Black language is a helpful tool for teachers seeking to be anti-racist in their work.
