Brightly-illustrated by Jenny Poh, and authored by CFL friend and UIC Professor Dr. Lynnette Mawhinney, Lulu the One and Only shares the story of a mixed-race girl named Lulu who learns to respond to the dreaded question, “What are you?” with a phrase that captures all the parts of her identity: fast and strong, a good singer, loving and kind, “a black pearl, unique and gorgeous.” She is “Lulu Lovington, the one and only.” The book helps all readers celebrate all the parts of the identity and also helps readers realize that they don’t have to categorize others based on their appearance.
