Kids in the Kitchen = Fun and Less Food Fussing

Session Number: 2
Room Number: I
Time: 11:25 AM to 12:25 PM

Presented by: Katie Chew & Ariana Oatman
Dominican University Head Start Nutrition Services

Kids cooking in the kitchen?! This idea may make some parents a bit nervous. Do you have a picky eater at home? Rest assured that getting children involved at an early age in simple recipe preparation has many benefits, like learning basic cooking skills and increasing their interest in trying new foods. Discover age-appropriate cooking tasks for your young child to help kick-start his/her journey to developing this life skill and building an adventurous palate. Who knows...you may have a future Top Chef on your hands.

As a result of this session, parents, families, and caregivers will
1) understand the important connection between engaging their young child in hands-on recipe prep and increasing the chance of the child trying new foods (decrease picky eating)
2) learn how to engage their young child in making a simple, healthful recipe, and
3) identify age-appropriate tasks their young child can help with during family meal/recipe prep.
